Rommel's Treasure (announced as The Search for Rommel's Treasure) is an episode from The Goon Show. It is the sixth show in the sixth series. The show was recorded at 9pm on Sunday 23 October 1955. The recording took place at the Camden Theatre, Camden Town, London.

The first British public broadcast was on the Home Service on Tuesday 25 October 1955 at 8.30pm. It reached a peak listenership of 3.0m.

The show's first repeat was the following Saturday at 7.30pm, 29 October 1955, on the Light Programme. It was listened to by 2.3 million. The next repeat was 27 years later on Sunday 4 July 1982, at 12.00 noon on Radio 4 in Smash of the Day).

Transcription Service Synopsis

The scene is the Libyan Desert, during World War Two, and Rommel is about to retreat in order to let the British win ('It's a shame to disappoint them after all the trouble they've been to'), but first he must bury his treasure. This he does with the help of the only man he can trust – Captain Moriarty. Five years after the war Moriarty returns to the desert to seek the treasure…

Originally recorded on TLO 88977 (15 ips ¼" tape recorded at Broadcasting House).

The original tape no longer exists, and the show included on Compendium Vol 3 was compiled from the TGS master tape, the POTG master tape and a domestic tape recording.[1]
