Insurance, the White Man's Burden is an episode from The Goon Show. It is the twenty-first show in the seventh series.

A pre-recording session took place Sunday 24 February 1957, 5pm. at The Camden Theatre, Camden Town, London (DLO 25168 (Hearts and Flowers)). The recording for transmission was created later that same Sunday, also at The Camden, at 9pm (TLO 23565).

The first Home Service broadcast was the following Thursday at 8.30pm 28 February 1957, its ratings were 2.3 million.

The show was repeated:

  • Monday 8pm, 4 March 1957, on the Light Programme to 3.4 million listeners.
  • Monday 9.30pm, 7 February 1964 on the Home Service (except Scotland} in Vintage Goons, to 0.4 million listeners.
  • Monday 12.00 noon, 11 September 1983 on Radio 4 in Smash of the Day.

Transcription Service Synopsis

The English Channel after the fire had been put out.

Who but Grytpype-Thynne and Moriarty could persuade Neddie Seagoon to insure the English Channel against the risk of fire! They are on to a good thing you would say. But you would be wrong, for the Channel does catch fire. You will hear how this amazing phenomenon occurs in this programme.
