==Biography==
He was born 30 October 1925 in [[Halifax, West Yorkshire|Halifax]], [[West Riding of Yorkshire]] and educated at [[St Peter's School, York|St. Peter's School]] in [[York]]. As a young man he began his career in [[repertory]] theatre in [[Yorkshire]] and he toured with a theatrical company headed by [[Jean Forbes-Robertson]].<ref name="Obit Guardian">{{cite news |url= http://arts.guardian.co.uk/news/obituary/0,,1499900,00.html |title=Shorter, Eric. After his [[Conscription in the United Kingdom#After 1945|national service]], he moved to London, and his early appearances on the [[West End theatre|West End stage]] were in intimate [[revue]].<ref name="Obit Guardian"/>
